Liquid Damage to Your Phone or Laptop? Avoid These Costly Mistakes

A single spill or splash can cause serious damage to your phone, laptop, or tablet. At Cybrix Electronics, liquid damage is one of the most frequent repair issues we encounter—and one of the most preventable from becoming a major problem. Whether your device has been exposed to rain, coffee, water, or any other liquid, taking the right steps immediately can significantly improve the chances of a successful repair.

Water and electronics don't mix. Whether it's a sudden rain, a knocked-over drink, or an accidental drop into the sink, liquid damage is one of the most common — and most mishandled — repair situations we see at Cybrix Electronics. Acting fast and acting right can be the difference between a quick fix and a total loss.

Here's everything you need to know.

What NOT to Do (This Is the Important Part)

Don't turn it on. This is the biggest mistake people make. If your device is wet, powering it on can cause a short circuit and fry components that would otherwise be fine. Resist the urge to "check if it still works."

Don't plug it in. Charging a water-damaged phone or laptop is just as dangerous. Electricity + moisture = more damage, potentially irreversible.

Don't use a hair dryer or microwave. Heat forces moisture deeper into the components and can warp or melt internal parts. A microwave will destroy your device entirely — yes, people have tried it.

Don't shake it aggressively. It might seem like a good idea to shake the water out, but this spreads liquid further across the motherboard and into ports and connectors.

Don't leave it in rice overnight and call it a day. The rice myth is persistent but unreliable. Rice does absorb some moisture, but it won't reach the internal components that matter — and the starch particles can actually cause additional damage.

What TO Do

Power it off immediately — if it's still on. Hold the power button and shut it down. Every second it stays on with moisture inside is a risk.

Remove the case, SIM card, and any accessories. Give it as much ventilation as possible. If the battery is removable, take it out.

Gently pat it dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Don't rub — just absorb surface moisture.

Keep it upright or at a slight angle so any pooled water can drain naturally from ports.

Bring it to a professional as soon as possible. The longer liquid sits on internal components, the more corrosion builds up. Time is critical — ideally within the first few hours.

A Real Case From Last Sunday: The Coffee Spill That Almost Took Down a Laptop

Last Sunday, a customer brought in their laptop after a coffee spill — and it's a perfect example of why getting to us quickly makes all the difference.

The coffee had gone straight into the keyboard and made its way down to the motherboard. The immediate symptom: the laptop wasn't charging at all, and neither of the USB-C ports were responding. The customer had tried plugging in different chargers with no luck.

When our technicians opened it up and ran diagnostics, the culprit was clear: the USB-C data line had been damaged by the liquid. The power delivery circuit running through that line was broken — which explained both the charging failure and the dead ports.

The good news? We caught it early. We cleaned the board, identified the damaged trace, and repaired the USB-C data line. No further damage to the motherboard, no lost data, no need for a full replacement.

One repair. One day. Laptop back in the customer's hands by evening.

That's the best-case scenario — and it's only possible because the device came to us quickly and the customer hadn't made things worse by trying to turn it on or charge it first.
